Choosing the Right Poker Game for You

Who could ever resist the inviting and challenging game of Texas Holdem, especially if the pot money is huge? It’s hard, believe me. I have enough experience playing poker to know how engrossing a game can be. But unknown to most of us poker lovers, there are mistakes that we often commit that we are not aware of. Yes, I’m telling you there are mistakes we commit from time to time that we need to avoid. What are they? They are playing all hands, raising every bet, and not knowing when to fold. I know you have done one or all of this before and probably still doing it today.

Did you know that to become a great Poker player you need to choose your games wisely? If you are so engrossed in your every game and commit the three mistakes I have mention all the time, you’ll impair your judgment and stop choosing your games wisely. Remember, your goal is to win more hands not lose them. And to do this, you need to bet on the winning hand and fold on the losing hand. If you don’t know how to choose your game wisely, you’ll end up just the opposite. So, your goal aside from winning more hands is to choose wisely the game that would suit best with your skill and the amount of money you have.

Don’t feel inferior and defeated if you don’t bet big. Understand that the key to winning in poker is not picking games that have huge bets. It’s playing the small cuts and wining in them over and over again. Take a look at the casino you’re playing at. They don’t usually earn a lot from the big betters. Instead, they earn millions through the small cuts played in the room.

Now think of the players in the room. Let’s take player A and player B. Player A is playing for a huge bet. He’s betting $80,000 for a chance at 60/40 odds. If he wins, he will take home $160,000. But if he lose, he would walk away with nothing. This type of bet is like “poker suicide”. It involves huge risk for the player; hence, not a sensible game for someone who has only $80,000 in his pocket.

Now, player B only placed a $10 bet in the same 60/40 odds. If he wins, he takes home $1,000, but if he loses, it’s $10 only. And if he keeps betting, he can win still win the $160,000 before the night ends. The increase may be small and take a while, but still he has the chance to win huge money without losing a lot. At any stage of the game he decides to stop, he is already a winner in any way.

This is what I say by choosing your game wisely, be it Omaha, Limit Holdem, or 5 card draw. As a good player, you must understand that to win money it’s better to win in many small pots than focusing in one large pot only. This way, you may not win the pots all the time, but you will still win pots more often.
